where does the 2006 polo get its spedo pulses from -its not from the gearbox ?

It probably is the gearbox, but will be an electronic speed sensor in the gearbox, not a speedo cable like in day gone by.
The wiring from gearbox to instrument cluster will be virtually impossible to trace, due to the complexity of the wiring loom in a modern car.

The only other place it could get its signal from is the ABS system, which has individual speed sensors behind each wheel.

Look for a electrical connection which goes directly into the gearbox. The speed sensor sender unit will still have to send a signal. Should just unclip. In the older ones (2000 onwards) it was just on top of the gearbox. U just disconnected it. The speedo won't work after this but will still light up.
