We are in World War 3 already. We have 2 factions:
1. Countries for a free society: US, UK, Australia, Israel, and few others.
2. Fascism and their enablers that hate capitalism.
The fascists are easy: Iran, N. Korea. The enablers have different degrees. You have the known supporters: Syria, Palistinians. Then you have the I refuse to deal with the issue liberals like France, the UN. You also have China, Russia, Venezuela that financially profit from their dealings with the fascists.
The War is barely about military force. It is about the propaganda war. A massive number of Americans believe that there is no problem and blame Republicans for any sort of things, even though a few years earlier, the Democrats were saying the same thing. We cannot allow people who want to kill us to exist. All it takes is 1 nuke and the US is done. Allowing Iran to have any program that MIGHT produce a nuke is not okay. Letting them get one and then dealing with it is not the answer.
The US government (including Pres. Bush) have allowed the media to perpetuate a fraud on the world on this war. They have given the emotional side of death, while not acknowledging the fact that war is violent and bloody. The terrorists believe that Americans will not take bloodshed because look at our history. We won in Vietnam (we won every military engagement), but we refused to fight and walked away. Look back to Pres. Carter and him not obliterating Iran for taking our embassy. He got voted out, largely because of his incompetence on this. Pres. Clinton had the bombing of the Trade Centers in 1993, attacks on the USS Cole, other bombings, and the money shot Somalia. I think that Black Hawk Down should be mandatory viewing for high schoolers.
If you do not know the story, we went into Mogadishu to take some warlords. Our soliders were trapped, about 20 were killed, and the bodies of a few men were dragged through the streets like animals. We should have turned the city into a parking lot, but we ran away like pansies.
At this point, Al Qaida and the boys knew their war was one of propaganda. The media in the US and around the world are willing accomplices. They broadcast the death and destruction, while not putting it in context of war.
There is an old adage that I enjoy: If you want to stick your head in the sand like an ostrich, you leave your tail in the air and that is where life sticks it.
We deserve to lose our freedom in this country because we are too stupid to understand that we need to defend it. This is a war that has never been fought before. Many of us refuse to admit that it even exists.

No. The U.S. is ridiculously overstretched already. Blair has lost all credibility, most especially re war, in the UK. The Spanish voted in a new government after the Madrid train bombings and quickly pulled out of the 'coalition.' Most of Europe still has strong memories of the devastation and have proven themselves cautious re entering into war. Russia seems to be occupied with internal problems. Iran just can't have a nuclear bomb ready in time for that be an escalating factor here.
It is possible that the Arab and Muslim nations will act together, but who would they invade? Israel has already defeated their combined forces twice. I suppose that sort of invasion could be the trigger, but there would have to be other arguments going on elsewhere.

Wars are usually named long after they are over.
World War 2 was not even called that until 1946, a year after it was finished. In 1950, many people thought the war in Korea was World War 3, but we ended up just calling it "the Korean War" when it was over.
Is this World War 3? We probably wont even know for years.

I hope not. it might be so, because all world wars started like that; one nation started oppressing anohter one and it went very far until all the other countries just became involved. let's hope this conflict gets solved for the sake of all the victims, and for our own sake, too. If political parties could discuss calmly without having to resort to weapons, and acted responsibly and maturely, this wouldn't have to happen. why can't they use communication as a tool, instead of firing and destroying lives?

I think that 9-11 will be the accepted historical starting point, but Operation Ajax in 1953 may be the real starting point.
