My impression is it depends where you fly from and to.
I flew two days ago from Granada in Spain to Liverpool UK and there was NO extra security from what I would expect normally.
I've been told that flights between the UK and US are a nightmare, and the flights from the mejor airports in the UK are busy too.
You are allowed to taek the essentials on to the plane. That consists of money (or a purse or wallet) a book, tissues not in the wrapper, sanitary items for babies (if travelling with a baby as long as the adult tastes the milk personally) and women (not in a box or external wrapper). All this must be kept in a clear plastic bag. The airline SHOULD provide all the correct info about this on it's website. And if all else fails, it will be available on the website of the airport.
I don't think you'll be able to take the MP3 player on, as it wouldn't be considered essential and it might pose a bit of a risk (I know some airlines don't let you use them on board, and others not during taek off or landing).
I hope ur flight isn't too bad, the news doesn't give the rosiest picture.

Hmm, think I heard on the news this morning that you will be able to take a small carry-on bag and that electronics are permitted but will have to go through stringent security. Probably best to check on the BAA website though to be sure. Have a good trip!

Those items should be okay. The problem is actually personal hygiene products right now. If you are concerned about what to bring, leave all your toothpaste, ahampoo, etc...at home and get travel sizes at your destination. It is always best to make sure you have no sharp objects. Wear slip on shoes, minimal jewelry, and preferably no belt.

I just heard on the news that the rules have relaxed a bit... I think you could take a book and small electronics. It's best if you check with your airline.
