my dog bit the big one last thanksgiving, then my aunt croaked a couple weeks later. we cremated the dog, but my aunt is pushing up daisies. i don't know why people in the pets catagory haven't been informed.

It is sort of the opposite of "euphemism". It means to use a rougher word when a more "genteel" one would work. Generally it means to make something sound worse than it is, such as saying that one sports team "slaughtered" another.
