Think Laser and Not Shotgun...
The shotgun approach is to you mass media sources flyers, posters, radio, tv, business cards, etc.
That approach works but it is costly and time consuming.
Your first step should be to come up with two lists...
1) The first list should be of people that have a large influence in your market.
2) The second list should be of everyone in your market that offers a complimenetary product or service.
You need to get your product or service in their hands for free, and work to get their endorsements. That creates buzz and will get you referrals if you ask for them.
That's just where I would start. There are other mass appeal things you can do like having contests, press releases, starting your own newsletter, etc.
That then depends on your market.
Good luck. I hope this helps.

Unfortunately, when you start a new business, advertising and marketing are going to be a KEY ingredient. Another important strategy is networking and having other professionals and businesses refer THEIR clientele to you. If the clientele of other businesses trust that professional, then the client in more likely to follow-up on that referral.
All in all, it takes a lot of hard work on your on part. But after about 2-3 years, you will begin to reduce the amount of your marketing and advertising a good bit. Then, you will rely on brand management. Throughout the history of your business, word-of-mouth and client referral will ALWAYS be an important aspect of gaining business from clients. Better yet, it's FREE!

Depends on the business!
The basics are straight forward word of mouth and referrals. Small local advertisements, good service, and clean and safe place of business.
Interpret it as you see fit, without knowing the business, I can't be specific.
