When our dog was in the hospital with liver problems, I emptied my 401K from my previous job, as well as put off "frivolous" purchases in order to make sure there was enough room on the credit card for her treatment. As long as there was a reasonable chance that she would come out the other side with a good quality of life, we owed it to her to give her that chance, and the money was a secondary concern.
We took on that responsibility voluntarily when we adopted her.

I had the worst pet dog anyone could have for my first one... he was perfect! Everyone that ever met him immediately fell in love with him. He was the most gentle Great Dane I have ever met. He was the worst because I knew I could go nowhere but downhill from there, lol!
I spent everything I could on him when he was diagnosed with an enlarged heart and there is only so much you could do. I can not put a price on it but I will say this... If I could have given one of my years on this planet to increase his life (quality life) by that same amount of time, so that we both would have died at the same time and loved each other til the end... I would have done that without a second thought!
I know what you mean... it pisses me off to see these idiots on here asking pet health questions from people that really don't know the answer, instead of taking the animal to the vet. People like that should NOT be allowed to have pets!
I'd be curious to see what those folks would do if that were their human child?

We've put off paying some bills to pay for vet care, we rang the companies and explained that we didn't have the money to pay them but we'd make it up the next time, they were fine with it. We were struggling at the time but it was no reason not to get our pet care. I also have another vet who I can go to who will let me pay him off. It's not great in an emergency as he's a fair way away but the option is there if needed.
I have a doll collection that I would be happy to sell if needed, I have jewellery that I could sell then there are the household goods and if necessary there's always the redraw facility on the house or refinance the mortgage.

Great "Q"
By the way, but with no offense to anyone, notice too that those who can't strictly afford it, also have children.
Rarely does anyone get a PET with thoughts of cost. You know that as well as I do. I need not list the reasons, but a pet is as much a responsibility of the owner/keeper, as a child. Unfortunately they are often neglected or given up,,, Unlike children???
If one can't commit for as long as 18 years, to a pet who might live so long, then they shouldn't have one. The issue of pet health can be staggering in costs, or not. There are no promises that any living thing will enjoy great health for a lifetime, but certainly, with care, even a pet can FEEL OK.

You know a lot of people don't own computers and are only online when they are at work like myself, but I wouldn't sell anything but I would try to speak to the vet and ask them If i could pay it off, I mean the bill, only once I get the response of the answer being NO would I try like lending the money and if that didn't work then and only then would I sell something, I sold my weeding and engagement rings once to take my dog to ahve her put down. But that is not the extent of my love for my animals, I divorced my husband because he was mistreating my animals

My dogs are my kids.
Whatever needs to be done must be done.
I agree with you.
I accepted my dogs, I accepted the responsibility that goes along with that. Dogs are helpless. They are like babies. They have no say-so in their care, and are totally dependent. You choose to own your pet, if you're burdened by that choice, then you have to know that you burdened yourself. Your pet did not choose to burden you.
I think a lot of people choose to own a pet, like they would choose to own a TV. The pet is a cute addition to the home, the novelty wears off, and when it's broken, it's broken, you get a new one.
What would I sell? I'm bankrupt, I drive a car that belongs to my mother, I use the computer, and internet at work, I live in a modest home ( when I say modest I mean handyman's nightmare). Why? Because I gave up everything I possibly could to attain custody of my dogs through a really cruddy divorce. The ex developed a meth habit, and was not ever going to take care of the dogs the way they deserved to be taken care of, but continued to argue with me that he should get to keep them. I couldn't leave them with him. Custody battles for animals are just as expensive as custody battles for your kids. So, I eat cheap, live without cable, have furniture, appliances, and household items that have been donated to me, buy clothes from goodwill, and have a savings account.....for my dogs....in case something happens......
That is as it should be, and the three of us are happy now.
I hope you get lots of answers like mine.
