Well some really good answers. Yes it is true the quiz is not as scientific as Id like it to be but I've scored the same on several of the more scientific ones as did my wife who always lands in the Conservative column. I think the only fair way to score this is to leave it up to all the folks here on yahoo so I'm putting it up for vote.

Because we only have two sides to chose from and we are forced (not literally) to choose which one would be best to represent us.

So far, most of these answers hit the mark. Those in the middle are what's sometimes called "fence sitters" and they tend not to vote at all. It's been said before and I'm not one to be as eloquent as some, but, apathy is the enemy of progress and growth. And as we all know, the U.S. is not very progressive and it takes a while for the growth part. This isn't really bad, but painful to those that would like to see a better, more just society.
Now if we could get some of those folks that don't vote to get off their be-hinds, we might have a better feel for where this country is. On second thought, be careful what you ask for!
WE need to get out of the BUSHES!!

Actually, this is a fairly easy answer. One that most people would come up with if they thought about it for a second. Average people are near the middle... Sorta right or sorta left. People who are far right or far left are more passionate in their thinking. The more passionate people are more likely to do something about it. So they run for office.
Besides, in order to create Chaos, The Republicans and Democrats try to be as different as possible. And so, they pick candidates as far Right and Left, respectively as they can.

Because the right and left have motivation to come out and vote. It is hard to motivate the centrists to vote because they aren't strongly for one hot button issue over another. This makes it more politically expedient to pander to the left or the right in order to get guarenteed votes.

Also, if you look at the (unscientific) results of this quiz, you will note that the majority of people fall under leftish philosophies (liberal and libertarian) than fall under centrist, or under rightish (conservative, statist):

How People Have Scored

Centrist 33.03 %

Right (Conservative) 8.58 %

Libertarian 32.87 %

Left (Liberal) 17.61 %

Statist (Big Government) 7.91 %

only 25% of us vote, so they pander to special interest groups. And special interest groups are typically either far right or far left

It would be helpful if you were to specify the country to which you are referring.

I'm glad the left don't rule the country. They're a bunch of nasty do-gooding gay and lesbian loving dickheads.
