In general, a colloid or colloidal dispersion is a substance with components of one or two phases, a type of mixture intermediate between a homogeneous mixture, also called a solution and a heterogeneous mixture with properties also intermediate between the two.
Typical membranes restrict the passage of dispersed colloidial particles more than they restrict the passage of dissolved ions or molecules; i.e. ions or molecules may diffuse through a membrane through which dispersed colloidal particles will not.

Substances can be classified on many basis. One classification is based on the size of the constituent particles.
A colloidal substance is the one which have size intermediate between that of a true solution and a suspension.Strictly speaking they have size in the range1-100nm.
Example is milk.
They are characterised by several properties like Tyndall effect, invisible to naked eye(visible only under an ultra microscope),unable to filter using ordinary filter paper,do not settle under gravity etc.If your sample have the above said properties it is most likely to be a colloid.

Colloids are the intermediate between true solution and suspension. In solution we have solvent (larger component) and solute (smaller component), similarly in colloids the solvent is called dispersing medium and the solute is called dispersed phase. The particle size of the dispersed phase (solute) is in the range10^-7 to 10^-5 cm. Although the dispersed phase is invisible to the naked eye they can be visualised by a powerful microscope. It is a heterogenous mixture. Depending on the nature of dispersing medium and dispersed phase, colloids are of different types. Like gels, emulsions, sols etc. Some examples are milk (emulsion), fog/smoke (aerosols), colored gemstones perl, opal (solid foam) etc. They also show properties like tyndal effect, brownian motion etc.

COLLOIDAL substances are referred to the substances which comes in the size of 10^-9........ie which have the size in betwwen the dispersion substances and the suspensions........in more baic language we can say as a sticky substance composed of particles that do not dissolve in other substances.

a colloid or colloidal dispersion is a 2 phase system of matter a type of mixture intermediate between homogeneous & hetergenous mixtures. in a phase colloid small droplets or partiles of one substance the dispersed phase are dispersed in one another continous phase.in a molecular colloidmacromolecules are dispersed in acontinous phase(or dispersion medium).

certain substances such as sugars, salts, diffused readily through a parchment membrane, others, such as gelatin, albumen, glue diffused at a very slow rate.the substances belonging to the former category which generally exist in crystalline state, are called crystalloids while the substances belonging to the second category are called colloids.
