When a baby needs to be burped it is because they have gulped air as they are eating. When a baby is feeding while they are asleep or they fall asleep while they are feeding, the baby is likely in a very relaxed state, and has gulped very little or no air at all. In fact, my daughter was having sleep problems and one expert (Tracy Hogg) recommends feeding the baby while they are asleep and to not burp at all when they are finished. This works because the sucking motion is automatic and they are so relaxed that burping is not required. I usually just gently (as to not wake her) change her position and if she has a burp in there, it will come out on its own.

Are you just trying to burp him once? Babies on the breast dont require as much burping as babies on formula.....
trying laying him straight down on your knee and rubbing his back in an upward position, from the base of back to shoulders with some pressure to it.

He may not need to be burped. Breastfed babies often don't need it! There is no air in your breast like in a bottle, so as long as you feed him before he is upset and crying, he won't swallow air. My three breastfed babies rarely ever needed burped.

Many breastfed babies don't need burping, especially when asleep. This is normal. If your baby doesn't burp and seems comfortable, then don't worry about it.
