First day of kindergarten marks a new beginning and a new phase of life for the child. Never again will it be just mom and the child. The child will now have a whole new life, totally apart from mom, and that is tough thing for many moms. The kindergarten teacher is accepting a big boy or girl into the class, while mom is sending her baby off on his or her own.

Not all moms. The basketcase senerio comes from moms who have stayed home with their kids since they were born and now letting them be cared for by someone else.

The same thing happens on the first day of infant day care or preschool or something like that. Its an attachment thing. They know that they can care for their child, but aren't confident that other people can, or that the kids can take care of themselves if there is trouble at school.

I only have one child. I cried the first day he started daycare, because I had been a stay-at-home mom until he was 2 1/2 years old. He just walked right into to daycare and started playing and was like "bye mommy"...it broke my heart, I almost wanted him to come and hold onto me and not want me to leave...I think him starting daycare was harder for me than him. I know I am going to be a mess when he starts kindergarten...only because my baby will be starting school...they really do grow up too fast!

I can't speak for others, but my mom freaked because I was her youngest, and for 20-some years she stayed at home all day with at least one of her kids. Once I started going to kindergarten she was home alone, with no kids to look after. It's a hard transisition because she knew we were all growing up, and would one day be out of the house.

I was baffled too before I became a mom but I understood their feelings.

Now, I'm not sure what will my reaction be once I let my baby start schooling. You see, for us you'll always remain babies in our hearts even until you grow old. I believe that's the consequence of being a mother. My baby's still considered a baby at 15 months but I think she'll always be our baby till she grew up. Just be tolerant with them if they cry so much. Just give them the assurance you won't hurt their babies.

it is a sign of growing up and getting old....our babies are growing up and we(moms) feel like we are getting old. starting school is a major milestone for all little ones and mom starts to feel like all the birds have left the nest and we have no one to take care of, if the kindergartner is the last one to go we feel as if we are no longer needed, because our kids are now starting their new independent life. my last one will start next year and I will boohoo all day I am sure. don't be too hard on her...she will need a few days or so to get accustom to the so called "loss" be kind and give an extra hug to your gal...that's all she needs.

Must be really attached to their kids. Mine were so excited about starting school that I didnt want to dampen their excitement with tears etc... All kids have to grow up and maybe that is harder for some moms to accept as this may be their first independent activity.

They miss the kids as much as the kids will miss them, even if it is only for a couple of hours.

many of the moms are used to their children being there every moment and seeing them leave is just a reminder of that they are growing up and leaving her; point being, it's her little baby.
