If you haven't seen the original, it might be. There are shocking elements and one scene from the original that lives in the history of horror cinema as a classic. And it is. The re-make does it justice, so at least one part is very creepy.
But, If you have seen the original, the new movie is more like a word-for-word re-telling than a re-make. Julia Stiles is miscast. I love Liev Schreiber, but I think he mis-read his character interpretation this time. At the time it was being made the actors said they were trying to make it more like, "Could this really be happening? And if so, what does that mean to my marriage and the world?" Whereas in the original, it was the '70's and it was more like, "Oh, the hysterical woman is imagining things". Unfortunately, I think they missed the mark in the re-make.
The worst thing is that the kid isn't scary looking. The kid in the original was a terror on and off screen (AMC has run a "Backstory: The Omen" that told stories about how this kid was a real little bas**rd). He looked like it, too. And HIS last smile was so chilling.
I recommend the original, even though it's a bit dated. Actually, if you want a movie more like modern scary movies (i.e., with more gore), The Omen II has some great death scenes. One "kill" I still can't watch. I also find Damian as a teen who knows what's going on more chilling than a child who seems to let events happen around him. But avoid The Final Conflict. Wow, that went off on a weird tangent.

The Omen is a good movie. i liked it alott. watched it 2 times. it's not really that scary to me. had more thriller time stuff than horror and gore. but, i can see how it would scare some people. you know, with all the 666 shiite they talk about. anyways, here's some more info:
THE OMEN (2006). Robert Thorn is a senior American diplomat whose wife, Katherine, endures a difficult delivery where their newborn child has died. Thorn knows the news will devastate Katherine, who had suffered two previous miscarriages. The hospital priest presents Thorn with another child born that night, whose mother died in childbirth. The priest compels Thorn to take the infant boy as his own; Katherine will never know the truth, and their son, which they name Damien, will be raised as their flesh and blood. As the child turns five, unsettling events begin to occur: Damien¿s nanny hangs herself at the youngster¿s birthday party; a strange priest brings dire warnings to Thorn; a children¿s trip to the zoo results in a panicked frenzy; Damien becomes hysterical during a drive to church; and blurred movements in a series of photographs portend shocking deaths. Enter Mrs. Baylock, Damien¿s new nanny, who seems to have a preordained devotion to the child. Then tragedy strikes closer to home. But only later does Thorn comprehend the truth: Damien is no ordinary child; he is the long-prophesized Anti-Christ. Now, Thorn must make the ultimate sacrifice to prevent the unspeakable terror that awaits the world.
Genre: Suspense/Horror and Remake. Running Time: 105 minutes. Release Date: June 6th, 2006 (wide). MPAA Rating: R for disturbing violent content graphic images and some language. Distributors: 20th Century Fox. US Box Office: $55,525,042.
CRITICS REVIEWS:
"An often identical retread of the original, but with some fine supporting performances and ghoulish deaths."
"The first one was chilling. This remake is an icy bore."
"...done with mood and style..."
"...plods along."
Average Grade: C
WATCH IT!

The original is one of my favorite movies! I do think the original is scary. As far as the remake: If you love recent horror movies such as Hide And Seek, Cursed, Boogeyman, House Of Wax, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and so on you will love the remake. I'll admit it has it's moments of jump scares. But I don't think the "jump scenes" can be considered scary just because they are true horror. So anywayIf you liked The Exorcist, Halloween, Psycho, and all of the older horror classics you should see the original.
Hope I helped

I'm a big fan of horror flicks, but was really disappointed with The Omen... it wasn't scary at all and to be perfectly frank, I found it to be really boring... watching it felt like a chore.
I really don't get why everyone hypes-up about it so much...
Hope you like it more than I did.

I saw the remake of "The Omen" and I was not too impressed with it. It did have some better special effects then the original, but the original with Gregory Peck is by far the best version. Like they say, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"

Saw the original.
Basically about people being killed in different horrible ways.
Scary too if you are a Christian and think this is going to happen (or maybe it already has - does Bush or Blair have the 666 logo? or am i thinking of the upside down police....).

I've seen it several times and really enjoyed it. I live near Guildford (where some of it was filmed) so a lot of the scenery is very familiar!
