there's a lot of space up there, and so it seems more likely that a lot of people can get there. and if a lot of people get to heaven, then you have more chances for yourself. instead, heaven is underground, there is less space, it might get full and this increases the chances of you staying out! :P

No one really knows where Heaven is. Visions have been seen of Saints going into the sky. That may be why. But mostly, I think it's symbolic. Like how God probably doesn't have a long beard. Since people don't know what Heaven is like, they have to set it somewhere and I guess the sky just seemed logical.

Heaven is not a place in the sky. Heaven is a higher spiritual plane of existence located outside time & space. That's why a person has to ascend to Heaven 'cos this earth exists on a lower material plane.

Its a remnant from first Egyptian, than Greek, and then Roman Mythology.

The egyptians believed that thier pharoahs were descended from RA, the Sun God.

The Greeks believed that the gods lived on top of a mountain - Mt. Olympus.

The Romans believed similar, that the gods lived above the earth and looked down on man.

Also, in the old testament, Moses had to go UP Mt. Sanai to meet with God.

So when the New TEstament was written, this commonly held belief that god/gods lived above us and looked down on us carried over. Since god does not live on a mountain, the only other place he can be is in the sky.

that's a very good question. I guess the sky is just associated with happy things because it's often blue and filled with pretty soft-looking clouds.

Psh, I just made that up. I don't know, I always thought Heaven was a different place for everybody. Like...a place from your childhood, a place you imagined.

im sure theres text in the bible, relating heaven to the sky. I believe people relate the sky to peace. a fluffy white cloud like a pillow. Heaven is peaceful like a blue sky with white clouds. Gentle warm peace.

Only kids think Heaven is in the sky. Adults who really believe in Heaven do not believe it is literally in the sky. Christians probably aren't as stupid as some would have you believe.

In the Bible, Jesus says that He will appears through the clouds on the last day, so it is logical to think that heaven is up and not down.

Linguistic fact. The heavens and the sky are interchangeable. One hears everyone from weather forecasters to astronomers referring to the heavens when talking about everything from rain storms to eclipses to shooting stars.

I don't think most people literately think heaven consists of living in the atmosphere....<--see how weird that sounded...But, God made the earth and when you go to Heaven you will be with him. So, it is probably associated with leaving the earth.
