People will always find a way to make puns and jokes. The more we try to prevent it by changing things, the more complicated we make life. Go with the flow. Laughter is good for the body and the soul, and even rude jokes can sometimes be funny. I'm retired and a grandma and my husband was in the navy, so I take it all with a grain of salt. In the overall scheme of things, a few silly stories don't make much difference.

Agreed! Seafarers is a great old word. Watermen works too. Why invite ridicule when there are so many better words out there?

Unfortunately, we will always have the pea-brainers (or pee-brainers, as the case may be) among us. I think "fixing" or altering a language to prevent them misusing/abusing it means they win. I, for one, do not want to give them that power.

Personally, I prefer mariner. Seaman is rarely used, due in no small part because of the reason you just cited.

In this age of equality and political correctness (thanks Tony!) seafarers are called just that now as near half of our Merchant Navy personnel is female!

They will only find something else to make daft jokes about. Let them get on with it, and simply turn away and roll your eyes at their immaturity.
