One of the default settings for Win XP is to restart the computer in the event of an error.
You probably have this option set and so you are not seeing the error message.
I think that you need to click on System in the control Panel
Go to the advanced tab there will be a button for restart or something. Uncheck the box that says restart on error.
You can also look at the event viewer to check for errors.

If your computer is spontaneously restarting, you've probably got a hardware problem. But just in case you don't, you could consider reinstalling your operating system. It might work, it might not, but if it does, it'll save you a world of hurt.
First, you should look into whether or not your computer is adequately cooled. Most modern motherboards have a temperature monitor and will shut down of they get too hot in order to preserve your hardware.
Next, you could try swapping out PCI cards to see if any of them are fried. I had a sound card go once and it made my computer unusably unstable.
It's also possible that something on your motherboard has been fried. Good luck with that one.
If you have technical support available to you, I recommend dealing with them. Fixing hardware problems is a major pain, and any time you can get someone else to do it for you is no bad thing. If you have no tech support, I'd try reinstalling the OS and then taking it down to your local computer hardware store. They'd love to charge you for fixing it, and in my estimation, it tends to be worth the price. You could easily spend two days messing with your box without identifying the source of the problem, or you could shell out $50-100 to have someone else do it for you.

I just went through that last week on my girlfriends comp. I had corrupted some files by mistake just jumping around real fast not giving the computer enough time to respond. The only solution is since you can't run a scan or anything is this, you need to Reinstall windows a fresh copy and you will be ok!! Believe me this is the only solution! You do not need a new motherboard!!!

It could be a number of different problems. However, this usually is a result of bad or insufficient RAM.
You may want to check that you don't have a bunch of spy-ware on your computer using system resources. Here is one of my most favorite spy-ware apps.

I don't know if this will solve the problem but try turning Computer off, wait a few minuets, turn back on, if it doesn't work try unplugging it then plug it back in, it works for some things,
Hope this helps.
