gonna go against the grain here...

"had better go see a doctor" is actually gramatically incorrect (if you take punctuation into account).

The proper "version" of the first statement should read, "had better go *and* see a doctor." Or you can concatenate that and make it, "had better go, see a doctor." That's an inferred statement though, inasmuch as you infer that while going, you will be seeing a doctor.

the reason for this is that "go" and "see" are both verbs, and "see" is not an adverb. (e.g. "go quickly" - quick is used as an adverb), so you're doing two seperate things, hence, go AND see...

"had better go *to* see the doctor" would be a direct statement, inasmuch as you are saying that the reason you are going is to see the doctor, and the two verbs are seperately defined by the infinitive...

They're both pretty much correct though (give or take punctuation), and you'd have to be quite anal to pick a hole in either one in general usage.

Not everything that is considered acceptable English makes grammatical sense. "Go see a doctor" is certainly the common usage. It is one of those cases where either is acceptable. English is a tough language for sure. Consider the poem at the link I've included.

Both are grammatically correct... the first one is heard most commonly.

Both are grammatically correct, which you use is a matter of personal preference.
