Invading the Japanese Mainland would be a daunting task.
At least 1M American casualties and more for the Japanese.
The coastline was more rugged and better defended than in france and the Japanese would fight to the death. The war could also drag on for another three or four years.
No one really knoew how destructive the bombs would be, so "clean" cities were selected.
When the American felt the response was too slow from the Japanese to Hiroshima (a sticking point was the emperor and some kind of special treatment for him, the US wanted unconditional surrender), the second bomb went.
It was also a different approach and the scientists wanted to see its capabilities.
Cloud cover prevented Kobe from being the second city; Nagasaki was a fallback target.

Americans are taught that it was a reasonable way to end the war, given what intelligence the US had on the Japanese,at the time and the fact America was war weary and wanted to minimize its own casualties.
It was thought that if Americans tried a typical air and ground assault, the Japanese would fight to the last person, even commit suicide rather than be dishonored by defeat and pillaged by conquering US troops. The devastation caused by an atom bomb would shock the Japanese into immediate surrender and save lives on both sides.

Considering invading Japan would kill 100,000 Americans the unfortunate answer was to use the bomb. Killing twice the amount of Japeneze that would of perished than if we invaded. The Japaneze would not completley surrender thus the threat of the Emporer rebuilding would still be there and the threat of another war would remain. After the first dropped there still was no unconditional surrender. The second one dropped and the Emporer committed suicide.

Race factor... the reason why Japan instead of Germany was chosen. One was to prove US supremacy to the world second one was to perfect the experiment and completely without reason.
Result was millions dead. Billions of life forms annihilated... radiation that may be still effecting our health and cause of cancers around the globe. The life forms including humans born in the effected areas to this date are often deformed due to radioactive contamination.
USA is yet to apologise to the world for what it did.

the USA beat hitler, and stalin to making the atomic bomb. now its time to test it. of course they tested them in the desert and in the oceans, but they wanted to see the real effects. melting sand and boiling water wasnt all that amusing. now all they need was a reason to use them on people to get the true effects. they got a reason to use them in retaliation of pearl habor. if hitler would have got atomic abilities before us, we'll be under german control now. the german forces got with in 50 miles of the new jersey coastline and they were so close to florida that they could see the lights of coastal cities. this was more than close enough to deliver a nuke to NYC.
