Never give them money, if you give them something it should be food or something to drink. Money tends to be spent on drugs or alcohol. I would never give to someone with some kind of gimmik...I think its just plain cheeky. If someone is really in need then something to eat and drink is the best thing for them to have.

This question I will not answer. But here are some thoughts

- many beggars look like they are doing some sort of act
- most cities have ordinances against soliciting, so beggars are lawbreakers
- some people don't think that they want to support the beggars drug habit
- Hey, isn't that what welfare, soup kitchens and homeless shelters are for? Wouldn't these beggars be doing a better service, if they did fundraising for their shelter or soup kitchen?

Begging on the streets should not be profitable, but should be a total waste of time. Nice people should simple smile as they walk by... maybe they should ask what SHELTER or Soup Kitchen that they can DONATE too.

IF you support beggars; that is no different than buying from SPAM e-mail. You are supporting a degrading profession.

When I see them I will not give them money because I know they will go buy beer or cigarettes and I need the money just as badly as they do. I work for my money, why can't they? Some are handicapped, I know, but it looks like they should get welfare or some kind of government help. I was in New Mexico once and a woman and her husband said they had had everything stolen out of their car, so I gave her a $20 bill to buy gas. My husband said she would probably not buy gas with it.

To tell you the truth I don't do beggar's, I always, always buy a Big Issue as they are the ones trying to help themselves and have usually been put in the situation they are in through no fault of their own, the 'beggars' round our town are not beggars, just drug addicts posing as beggars to get money for drugs.

that's a hard one, but they've probably got money than us, ..well some of them, there is proper helpout there if they need it, eg, hostels & soup kitchens. if you've got nothing, then anything is a help. for genuine cases anyway. I've given money to beggars both here & abroad, so I don't know. wouldn't take one home though. DON'T mean that in a nasty way

It all depends. If he or she looks like they are healthy and able to work. I usually say get a job. If they are older or female with children I will give my last dollar. I think that's being compassionate.

Wouldn't give them anything. Cambridge is over-run with them and the majority seem to be smackheads, alcoholics and shoplifters. On several occasions I have seen them angry and aggressive when people have offered them food rather than money.
