Tell the tranny that you don't want him to live in your truck any more.
Seriously: fluids evaporate. That's why you should check the fluid levels regularly (especially before a long trip).

You are losing fluid somewhere. It could be from a bad seal, a leaking line, or even an internal problem with the radiator. Did you check the fluid prior to starting your trip? if not, you really have no way of knowing if it is a small leak that just finally lost enough to cause a problem, or something that happened on your trip. If something like the front pump seal is leaking, you may not see any evidence of the fluid, because the fluid leaks inside the bell housing.
Top off your transmission with the correct fluid and check it often, to see the extent of any leak! You may also want to have the transmission serviced and flushed if you drove it with a low fluid level for any length of time.

Probably evaporated with over heating. Does the fluid smell burned? Look brown? Take it to a tranny guy. Transmissions are to expensive and tempermental to mess around with. While you are there be sure to have him flush it, AND change the tranny filter. And if you plan on doing more long hauling, put an oversized transmission fluid cooler on it, otherwise it's gonna cook again. Let's hear it for manual transmissions - again! I'll put in a clutch any day.

what kind of truck do you own? It makes a big difference. Some transmission are not meant to haul certain loads, and when you do, it cause the transmission to overheat, boil fluid, and burn clutches.
So with out more info, can't shed any more insight into your problem.

You've got to have a leak. As far as I know, it wouldn't burn like oil would to give you a low level. It may be a gasket. If you can't find anything, take it to a mechanic. Just be sure to tell him what you told in your question. And make sure he finds the problem and doesn't try to make it out to be complicated. Mechanics don't think women know what they're talking about!
