As a matter of fact, many studies have shown that position in the family has a big impact on personality development. The oldest child tends to be the one who has the toughest time relating to other people, while the youngest tends to be the most socially gifted.

But the oldest child also tends to be the most diligent, and economically successful later on in life. So there are compensations. Relax.

I think depending on the gap in age somewhat members of a family will draw comparisons between one another i.e. he/she is the smart one or he/she is the funny one etc... this would certainly effect how the sibling will feel about them selves and hence impact on their developement. Other things like having to share etc... will differ with family structure aswell. In psychology most psychologist will agree that these factors (enviromental factors) wiil impact at least to some degree on a person, there have been countless studies to evidence this theory.

So in short YES.

A segment was just done on the Today show about middle children and things. I'd suggest watching the replay of it at 11AM or if you're on the West coast, turn it on later.

yes being the oldest gives you a lot of responsibilities
being the middle makes you independent and makes you social
being the youngest makes everything easy to get
that is my humble opinion thanx

I think the middle child is prone to being different in personality as they are more prone to ADD and hence their personality may be more likely to change if they have this disorder.

the eldest child obviously has to be more authoritative and more responsible as far as the siblings are concerned and therefore generally makes the temperament & personality much maturer.
