You don't mention how much memory is installed in your computer. Win XP is very memory intensive, but without that information, it's hard to say if memory is the issue.

The other possibility is the video driver.

The video driver is a set of instructions that tells the screen what to display. If the driver is older, it may not be able to keep up with the latest software demands.

To find out, RIGHT CLICK the MY COMPUTER icon. Select PROPERTIES. For most versions of Windows, click the tab marked DEVICE MANAGER. (For Windows XP, click the tab marked HARDWARE, and then the button marked DEVICE MANAGER.)

Scroll down the list until you see VIDEO ADAPTER. Click the plus sign next to it. A new line of text will appear. Click that line of text. Click the tab marked DRIVER. Check the date.

Next, go to the website where your video adapter was made (www.radeon.com , www.s3.com , etc) and locate the latest driver they have available for download. Compare the date with your adaptor.

If theirs is newer, download and install it.

If the newer driver doesn't solve the issue, let us know how much memory you have.

I am currently running a Cyrix-233 which does the same thing. I am currently running Windows 98 on it and periodically it will seem to do nothing. One day while trying to figure out the problem I left my case open.

The problem is that when you have a slow processor running newer software and programs they will constantly use a large percentage of the processor. This creates a lot of heat and it will slow down your computer to a literal crawl until it dissipates enough heat to return to normal speed.

The best thing to do is upgrade your computer. You could also look into a better Fan/Heatsink. Whenever I run processor-intensive programs and my computer threatens to freeze, I take off the heatsink and fan and put a popsicle (IN ITS WRAPPER) on my processor. It quickly cools it down and allows me another 20 minutes to finish whatever im doing.

Computers don't last forever, and with time become slower and don't work like they used to. Plus 550MHz was what my old computer was and I gave it to my parents. When i use their computer it seems like i could make dinner dessert and eat it before the computer ever loads up compared to a 2.6 ghz.

Also but if you have allot of spy ware, or trackers on your computer that slows your computer down. Plus if you do not clean your hard drive from your temporary Internet files that also slows your computer down.

Make sure you De-fragment your computer once in a while. installing and deleting allot of programs will spread your files out on the drive so your computer takes more time to find these files.
