Set animal-friendly traps with a bit of cheese to allure them to the trap. You can always call the exterminator too.

Spread some rat poison around in your attic. Be sure to keep domestic animals away from the poison.

are you sure they are rats and not mice? If they mice get a cat, if they are rats, cats won't mes with them. You can either go get yourself a nice siz snake and turn it loose in your attic or lay down poison for them in various places. You can get rat poison at any store

rats are about the size of squirrels ... if one gets trapped in a wall and dies, it will smell bad for a long time. this is a job for a professional who will be responsible for removing the dead bodies as well as seeing the traps/poison are used to be best advantage.

Mix cement and cornmeal together, set it out in containers and the rats will eat it and die. Close off any entries with tin, nailed over them.
