A Caliphate is a merger of civil and religious authority. The Sultan of the Ottoman Empire was the self declared Caliph of all Muslims under Ottoman civil and/or religious authority. With the abolition of the Sultanate in 1922(?) the Ottoman caliphate went with it.

It was the result of WW1 and the dismantling of the Ottoman empire. When Turkey was declared a republic in 1924 the Ottoman Caliphate was made defunct.

Ye I remember that - the fighting was quickly over when the barman called 'last orders' and a new agenda was set creating a new hostile barrage of single minded nutters. Hope that helps
