I have used Western Digital ever since I started building computers (8 years) and I have never had a problem with them. I currently have an old MS-DOS computer in which I use a Western Digital Caviar 2250, which was manufactured on the 17th of May in 1994. It still runs perfectly, with no bad spots and no errors experienced.
I started using Seagate drives 2 years ago and so far I have had no problems whatsoever.
The Seagate harddrives tend to be faster with normal operations, 5-10MB at a time. But the Western Digital harddrives really shine if you are handling 50MB or up.
If you are just an average computer user the Seagate will most likely be the best choice.
If you are a serious gamer you are going to get close to the same speed with a striped RAID array. If you aren't going to use RAID then Western Digital harddrives are the best.
There are currently a lot of stories about Maxtor harddrives failing days after their warranties, so I would research more about them before I would buy one.
