You need more than just anti-virus protection, but all of the following protection software is FREE.

I use all of the following Free software with Windows XP SP2 and Internet Explorer with MSN toolbar and the pop-up blocker turned on and have never had a single problem with my computer sense Microsoft came out with SP2. (knock on wood.) (And be sure to keep Windows and the following software Updated)

The best Anti-virus is: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. (www.grisoft.com)http://www.grisoft.com/doc/289/lng/us/tpl/tpl01

The Best Spyware defense is: SpyBot Search and Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html)<--English version

AND: AdAware SE (www.lavasoft.com)
AND Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.info/kb/)
The best Firewall besides the one that comes with Windows is: Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/co... or just (www.zonelabs.com) and select the FREE version.

These are all FREE and are all that are required. There is no reason to pay for this kind of software, except to give a donation to the writers if you can.
ALL the above programs are recommended and should be run on a regular basis. With some the free versions they must be run manually.

The best way to avoid getting any Malware (virus, Trojan's, spyware, etc) is to practice safe computing. Microsoft and many others have countless articles on the subject of safe computing. (something I think should be taught in schools)

I bet that 99 out of 100 will tell you to get AVG from Grisoft, which has to be the best value for money (it's free) anti virus software around. Also get a free firewall from Zone Alarm, & whilst you're at it, a free spyware remover, from Ad Aware.

take my advice, avast 4.7 is probally the best free program that has walked this earth,i could write all the things that are good about it but i would run out of space so just go to http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html,and download it today,
it installs in around 3 minutes and after a restart will update in about a minute, you will know when you are up-to-date as you will hear the program say"virus database has been updated"in a cool american accent
another good feature is the avast on-access scanner icon which will spin in your taskbar everytime you move around in internet explorer,so you know you are always protected
although a.v.g is a average scanner it has too many flaws, such as it picks up viruses that dont exist(false positives)
good luck

In addition the the virus scanners suggested above (all good but Avast! gets my vote) it would also be useful to scan for and remove any adware & malware using something like ewido. Silly name, but cracking software & a free version is available

AVG Anti-Virus (as everyone else said) is great! It's free for personal use. It can be found here - http://www.vermontpcsolutions.com/tools_anti_virus.html - along with a list of other free anti-virus applications.

Good Luck!

There are 3 main types of mal-ware that will infect your PC:
-Viruses
-Spyware
-Adware

You want the following 3 pieces of software to deal with them.

AVG Free Edition: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5
Spybot Search&Destroy: http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Spybot_Search_and_Destroy/1043809773/1
and AdAware SE: http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5

Download each and run them one by one, ensuring to update the virus definition files when prompted to.

Thi trio should solve your problems.

Otherwise.... Get a Mac ;-)

I agree with most of you. AVG Home Edition, by far, is the best. Plus, it's free!

Yep, AVG is fine for most porpoises just not as powerful/comprehensive as 'paid' versions. Still adequate though.
