Make sure that the audio cable is correctly plugged in in the computers audio output (sometimes color coded as green, make sure you dont mix it up with the microphone input or such -- it wouldn't break things but it wouldn't work of course).
Check volume is on on your system ( Start->Control Panel->Sounds Speech and Audio devices->Sounds and Audio devices
Of course make sure that the volume on the speaker is turned up.
If none of that works your speakers are probably broken.

first of all its not a pc problem, its a speaker problem... check the connections at the back of the pc and make sure u have the cables in the right ports....
also depends which speakers u have, I use the Jbl creature speakers and the light, lights up but there was no sound first time, turns out the cables have special shapes and you need to make sure you put the cables in properly....
if all else fails, could be your sound card, check the drivers...

Check the volume control in the bottom right corner next to the time, make sure the main and wave sliders are (almost) right up.
Ensure the 'mute' box hasn't been ticked.
If this doesn't help you may have either corrupt/missing drivers for your soundcard or possibly a faulty soundcard.

Check you volume on your pc. It sounds as though you have accidentally set it to mute. You will see this volume button along the bottom of your taskbar.
