From this wide demographic the TV companies get an idea of who is watching what and when

I don't think they really can tell who is actually watching certain programs. The people who have the boxes in their house aren't necessarily watching the show, just because the TV is on.

A few years back I was asked to be in a survey program and write down all the shows I watched for a week. It was difficult to fill out the survey booklet because they wanted to know everything you watched, everyone that was watching it in the family and it was broken down into 15 minute intervals. I had a family of 6 watching TV at the time and it was a PAIN to accurately keep track of them all. I had the feeling that a lot of people that got it just put down their favorite shows whether they were actually watching them or not and didn't fool with writing down the rest of them that they really watched.

Apart from the normal market research nonsense, just WHY do you think Mr.SKY and Co insist that those of us who have Sky keep the box permanently connected to the box? And don't insult my intelligence by saying it's so that they can update your box when necessary - Top-Up TV can do all their updates through the aerial by transmitting your unique number and the info so that only YOU get it.

the same way they can guess how the country will vote at the next election - by asking a "representative sample" and then extrapolating the information out.
they only have to ask the viewing habits of a few thousand people to make a reasonable guess as to what everyone is watching.
