Today Sri Lanka is probably not very important to the Us, hence a thoughtless statement like that must have come out of George Bush's mouth. But it is not only George Bush who has made such statements, previous presidents when they gave safe harbor to the Sikh terrorists also did so claiming that the Sikh terrorists were Freedom fighters, as did a number of other western countries. Canada awoke after the downing of the Boeing747 Kanishka, US did that after 9/11, as did UK after their trains were bombed.
Any leader of a country should be careful while making statements of any kind pertaining to internal disputes in any other country. I don't think that Bush is qualified to make judgments of this kind, if he has then he is making a blunder.

Can you provide a source for the 'claim'? I guess not, because you didn't.
This is from November 2003.
"Washington says it supports recent peace moves on the island, as it prepares to welcome Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe for talks with George Bush."
It also includes a pictur of "W" with his hand on the PM's shoulder.
The second is from 2005.
"President Bush says Sri Lanka having experienced Terrorism and Persevered, understands the Threat that Terrorism poses to Democracy and the World - 27 May 2005"

He has a long precedent - for instance, Reagan and the Contras - these were certainly not "freedom fighters" but were involved in spectacularly horrible attrocities.

george bush is wrong on both cases. the tamals are freedom fighters, because like the iraqis and palestinians, they have been persecuted and opressed.
