Thank you for posting this question. I totally agree. I've been living in Amsterdam for over a year now and LOVE it and get really annoyed when the sex and the drugs is all people can think of when amsterdam comes to mind.
As far as getting away from it... you can. I live just 10mins from centraal station and the only time I see a "sex" or "erotic" is well...never.. unless I hang out in the RLD but I never do so problem solved. I'm not so much against the pot so it doesn't phase me if I pass by a coffeeshop... barely notice them to begin with.
There's so much more in this city to notice. Arcitecture, culture, canals, cafes, ducks, swans, music and art. I love it here and get really defensive of this beautiful place I call home.

Those don't even come to mind when I think of Amsterdam. I think of the museums (Van Gogh, Rembrandt House, Stedelijk, etc) Anne Frank House, the canals, the architecture, and lots more.
To answer your question further I think people are thinking of the coffee shops and Red Light District because they are in the news so much recently. If you want to negate the negative press seems like the tourism board (or whatever they are called there) needs to launch a counter campaign.

There are some beautiful places just outside Amsterdam as well, such as the Keukenhof Gardens, I took my son there, aged 15 and he kept moaning he'd be bored, yet had a whale of a time exploring, looking at the sculptures of bulbs, standing in the over sized clogs, worrying me on the stepping stones! There are also cheese factories and diamond factories, On the main town square of Amsterdam I found a little office that did day trips, good value and showed us that the city was far more then hookers and dope

I have been to Amsterdam a few times and yes there is more but it seems hard to get away from signs that say SEX and EROTIC, Coffee shops, crappy over prices tourist restuarants, and drunk stoned tourists. There are some pretty areas but they are mared but all the crap around it. This last time we stayed near the opera house and it was quieter, until you hit the Hard Rock, and there were some nice local restuarants. I just hate all that other stuff there. It seems so trashy.

That's the only thing that is missing from their hometowns. Otherwise, it wouldn't be all that special (the GRASS is always greener on the other side).
