dogs definitely. hands down. they're more loyal, more effusive in their affection, they can protect, they can guard, they teach us how to love selflessly.
cats are just downright mean and cold.

I would have to say a cat. I have two cats and they are the greatest. I think cats because they are independant and free. They dont need that much attention, and for a person who lives alone a cat is the best pet followed by a fish. the only difference is that you can pet the cat but not the fish. I feel that cats think they are superior and they look nice sitting on the couch.

Cats, definitely. They're much more intelligent than dogs--and many humans, for that matter. They're individuals who show loyalty only to the person who provides for their needs; dogs, on the other hand, unless they're well-trained, will attach themselves to anyone who shows them the least attention. Cats are independent and self-reliant; while dogs, once domesticated, need constant attention and care by their masters. Cats are all-around better company than dogs.

I have both. My dog is my best friend. My cat is very aloof. The dog is easier to take care of but I still love the cat too.

dogs, they are obediant and when you tell them to be quiet they do, they can warn you when somthing is wrong, good companionship, they dont get hair balls, you can take them for walks or to the beach, on holiday they will put them selfs infront of another attacking animal.
they help people with their work. they dont kill birds!

dogs if you are active and enjoy the outdoors, cats if you don't like to bother, they are pretty self sufficient. Neiter if you are never home.
