What is a good men's watch to give to a 30 year old professional? (read on please..)?

I'm willing to spend up to or around $500 if I felt it was worth it. This is to give my fiance on our wedding day. He is a 30 year old professional. I'd like something classy, timeless, and with a metal band (steel, silver, white gold.) If you could recommend a specific watch or watch brand it would be a big help. I don't really know much about watches.. but I know he wants one...

I have worn wrist watches for Seventy Years and I found that a good leather band is much more comfortable than a metal band. You should not look on a wrist watch as a piece of jewelry as the Gold etc. is wasted on a watch.
You should be looking for one that has a conservative look and keeps accurate time.
In my opinion a slim watch case is desirable.
I have had a watch with a solid gold case for many years - it was a gift. Ten years ago, I
purchased a Movado look alike, made by Peugeot, for $19.00 and it is the best watch I have ever had and everyone admires it.
