I am breastfeeding my one-year-old and also have a caffeine addiction. I was drinking a two-liter of diet pepsi a day but I've toned it down a bit. I quit caffeine cold turkey when I got pregnant but I couldn't take the migraines on top of the morning sickness so my doctor told me to drink as much as I needed to curb the headaches. I did give up the coffee once the baby was born as it made her really hyper in-utero. I have tons of milk and it has never given my daughter any problems like insomnia. I actually sleep better when I do drink some caffeine in the evening....weird.

Too much caffeine can cause your baby to have trouble sleeping. It will not do anything to the quality of the milk--it will still have all the vitamins, minerals, protein, antibodies, etc. Most babies do fine if you limit your caffeine to 500 mg. or less per day. A 5 oz. cup of coffee has about 100 mg., and a 12 oz. soda has about 50 mg.

Your diet will also have very little effect on the quality of your milk. Unless you have had a truly horrendous diet for years, you will always produce high-quality milk. In fact, *most* women who have lived their entire lives until famine conditions still produce milk with everything their babies need. Eating well is important for *you*, but it barely affects the baby.

I found this info. for you...

This is a very common question for nursing moms. Some women have given up coffee during their pregnancy and are looking forward to the time that they can safely enjoy coffee again. It is recommended that nursing moms drink no more than five cups of coffee (with caffeine) per day. Make sure to count all sources of caffeine, such as teas, soft drinks, pain relievers, stimulants and chocolate (which produces the same effect as caffeine). If a nursing mom consumes more than five cups of coffee a day it could accumulate in her baby's system, resulting in overstimulation. This may cause wakefulness and irritability in the baby.

The caffeine in one cup of coffee per day should pose no problem for your baby. If you suspect he is affected by your caffeine intake you can abstain for a week or so and observe any changes. Enjoy!

It's fine to have caffeine in moderation while breastfeeding. The estimate we often hear is "less than five 5-oz cups of coffee" or 500 mg/day is considered acceptable. (See link below for a chart to help you figure out mg of different foods and drinks.)

Caffeine is approved by the American Academy of Pediatrics for use in breastfeeding mothers. Per Medications and Mother's Milk (Hale 2002, p. 100-102) caffeine is in Lactation Risk Category L2 (safer); milk levels are quite low (0.06-1.5% of maternal dose) and usually peak 1 hour after ingestion. One study has indicated that chronic coffee drinking might decrease iron content of breastmilk (Nehlig & Debry, 1994).

Some babies (especially under 6 mos old) might be sensitive to caffeine, so watch your child for any reaction. If your baby does appear sensitive to caffeine, the sensitivity usually fades as they grow older.

SO.....in my opinion.....it's fine in moderation. Try not to go over the 500 mg per day and then drink juices or water or something healthy the rest of the day. Know that drinking too much caffeine can make you dehydrated. (Caffeine is a diuretic.)

TO THE PERSON BELOW ME:
Many caregivers actually DO recommend that nursing mothers continue to take prenatal vitamins.

ALSO.....
You DO NOT have to drink milk to make milk. After all.....do cows drink milk? ;-)

What is your problem? Is the baby refusing it? Mine would refuse if I ate spaghetti. Whatever you eat will change the flavor of your breast milk. Especially strongly flavored foods.
If you are not making enough breast milk, try drinking more water. As much as the good folks at the La Leche League want you to believe that nursing will always produce more milk, It doesn't always work. If you have tried and cannot produce enough milk, there is nothing wrong with supplementing with formula.

it wont make your breast milk bad. breast milk contains absolutely everything that baby needs at all times. certian things and strong flavours can come through in the breast milk and your baby might not like it.
have caffeine in moderation, try and eat lotsa fresh fruit and veg and carry on taking your pre-natals and baby will be fine.
oh yes, you must drink lotsa water and that should help with milk supply.
to what Colleen O said: health care officials advise you to keep taking your pre-natals while you are breast feeding full-time.

I don't really know, but I can't imagine that caffine is all that good for your baby (they don't really need the pick-me-up).

I do know, however, that most (if not all) of the chemicals that the mother has in her system are passed through the milk to the baby.

Be healthy and your baby will be it too!

it doesn't really affect the quality of our milk but because it may give your baby gas or an upset digestive system and because you should be putting in your body 99 % healthy doctors do recommend that you limit your caffeine intake and replace it with either milk juice or water

love is ...
that a hiding feelings ,which you can`t explain it by words..
which go around and every where , in this world..
looking about its waiting chance, to enjoy the feelings...
and you charm the eyes and the hearts...
quietness sneak into , and to settle down in the mind and the heart ,against of you ...
inside of the heart , to own the heart and the passion..
to control on you...
the love is that feelings which can own the person from inside...
and to take him around the world as it wish ,
with its happiness or its sadness...
wander him any where even on the seas,
and to walk on the seas without diving into deeply inside...

the love....
is that tasty epidemic , which infect all people without exception..
has its magnetic , which attract all together....
and without love , life never to continue in any planet...
love has many great meanings and definitions,
differ from one to another lover..
every lover has his private imagination and definition to the meaning of love...
and has his way in loving ...

that is my imagination about that great words..
