The instructions manual indicates that we need to have a ferrite core attached to the DC40 digital camera adaptor if it is Asia region. Will using the adaptor without the ferrite core damage the unit?

The ferrite core on the power cable of the DC40 is intended to isolate electrical noises between the camcorder and the AC power adapter. It prevents electrical noise (interference) generated in the power adapter from reaching the camcorder. It also reduces the amount of electrical noise generated by the camcorder which can feed back into the AC power line.

The worst thing that will happen if you do not use the ferrite core is that you may not have a clear sound and/or picture during recording or playback while using the AC adapter. Or you may cause interference in some other equipment which is plugged into the same power system.

Nothing will smoke if you do not use the ferrite. However, I would not swear that if you try this in China you will not be instantly accosted by the "Red Power Supply Police".
