In most cases a parakeet will close their eyes and throw their heads over their back, tucking their beak into their back feathers. Sometimes they'll lift one foot and tuck it into their stomach feathers. Birds, like dolphins, seem to be able to sleep with half their brain awake. You'll know when they're doing this when they're sitting on their perch and one eye is open and the other is closed. Sometimes they'll have their head over their back, too.

They'll doze with their eyes closed, but when they go to sleep they puff out their feathers, pull up one foot, and tuck their beak around back by their wing. Sounds uncomfortable, but it works for them!
