Root Beer is Non-Alcoholic! It is reputed to have been created by Charles E Hires in 1866. He certainly was the first to sell it commercially. The term Root Beer was chosen to make it more appealing to the hard drinking miners that was his target group of customers.
In one of Paul Harvey's 'The Rest of the Story.' broadcasts he tells about how the temperance league (a group who wanted all alcohol banned), targeted Hires and his 'Beer' concoction as being in cahoots with the devil because of his drink.
The irony is Hires was himself very active in the temperance organization and was a devout Quaker.

Root beer, birch beer, sarsaparilla, and ginger beer are all non-alcoholic beverages. The first three are all similar with kind of a rich, medicinal taste; ginger beer is like ginger ale with a much stronger, spicier ginger "bite". These drinks were all very popular before cola drinks became the standard in North America. Nowadays only root beer is widely available; the others are usually only sold at specialty stores (health food or gourmet).

A&W Root beer is non alcoholic. It is flavored with Sarsparilla root, but not brewed in the true sense, so therefore no alcohol. If it was alcoholic, it wouldnt be open for sale to minors.
