Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) has little to do with room temp.
It has to do with 'Sleep Apnea', which everyone does, but in newborns can prove fatal.

8/14: There are monitors available to alert you if your child does stop breathing. (I did a search, and there is a controversy as to how well they work.)

My daughter had worst case of it when she was less than a week old. She was in NICU for a while. The way dealt with it was to elevate her head a little, put long but not thick pillows made with beans on both side of her so she won't roll on her tummy.
But they said it doesn't have to be on tummy for it to heppen like they used to think...
So I kept waking up more than often to check on her. Oh and they said no toys in her crib, no crib covers along side of it, which shuts down a air flow a bit.
