we had to take a class on illegal downloading...... i know its illegal to burn a copy of a cd to give to a friend, but my friend made me a mixed cd of good charlotte and gorillaz. she owned the cds she put on thier, it was a christmas present. i think i lost it too.....

As far as I know- copying any music or video item for anything other than personal use (i.e. making a copy of a c.d you purchased to use, while the original remains in its case- avoiding damage) is illegal (though the personal copying may be illegal too).

What your friend did is technically against the law, but I really wouldn't worry about it too much-- I think it's mainly a concern when people sell copied c.d's and videos for actual cash, or when people make excessive copies to hand out to friends, family, etc.

It's such a common thing that I really wouldn't freak out if, I were you...

as long as you don't sell them it's okay i have the same problem i know i need to stop cuz i just used my last cd and i'm outta money but cds are too expensive if you only listen to 1 or 2 songs on it thats stupid burn your own just don't sell them

that is legal because she owns the cds and she mixed the songs. not that she could have gone out and bought the cd she made.

Technically, No. She gave you music that she doesn't hold the copyright for. Under U.S. copyright law, this isn't legal. However, I would doubt you would get in trouble for this activity.
