thats a good point I never thought of it that way.

maybe because beards make people look wiser then they actually might be?

one would need to study the different cultural reasons that went into each religion and see if their is a common theme

Alohas

A razor is not an essential of life...

Older Buddhist monks Grow beards, I know many here in Hawaii, Japan, Korea and Thailand.

Many Orientals however do Not Have Noticable Facial hair until they are older than 35 to 45.

Well i read all other answers and none of them is correct. I am a sikh and in my religion not even men but women are also not allowed to cut their hair. This is becoz its a belief that hair are a part of ur body and we should not cut them. This is so becoz hair(though they r dead) protect our body from heat and other climatic conditions. This is a scientific reason behind growing hair. Now since only spiritual and faithful persons(towards their religion) practice such things, therefore now a days only they keep beard and long hair i.e. they dont cut their hair.

Long beard or long hair it's a symbol for being wise. In ancient time, some people were pictured like this, in order to describe them as ''wise men''. They could have any hair cut they wanted, the picture was just a showing of their qualities. People today saw those pictures and thought that it is necessary to have beard, because theirs ancestor had beards. It's just a misunderstanding.

Well its a LAW of moses!

to grow a beard! If you don't grow a beard you are breaking a law and are sinning.

So I am sinning, but I think the cost of razors are going to go up so maybe I'll stop sinning this one, maybe.

I have heard this from a peson. He says "Man without a mustache and a beard" is similiar to a "woman with a mustache and a beard".
Remember it is not my words.

Sounds like patriarchal tradition since its hard to imagine a real spiritual reason for it.

Because beards are awesome. And it gives them that crazy, Old-Testament prophet look.

yeah, and i think that the sikh religion (which is a very GREAT religion, i am not mocking it) doesnt let you cut ANY hair at all, because its considered mutilation of the body which god gave you, and that is disrespectful to god
