The same reason why it took humans so long to realise that the world is flat and any other theory would be considered blasphemy
Its not the inability to realise that keeps humans fighting over religion ( or anythingfor the matter ) its Pride, Arrogance and Ego that fuels such aggression. It's the whole I am always right, so you gotta follow me mentality... so much for free will
It is because some people feel since "I" believe it, "I" must be right, and since "I" am ALWAYS right, Everyone MUST do what "I" think is right, even if I have bash their heads in to see how right i am... Isnt that why people fight? to WIN because they believe they are right and no other opinion is valid?

how do you know all people will end up in one place? it is up to each individual to find their own path and beliefs. religion answers questions for a lot of people and no matter what, until the idea of God is disproved (which I don't think will ever happen) there will be different religions. when their are different beliefs, there will always be "fights" over what is right to believe.
and how do you know for a fact that their is only one god? no one will ever know for sure and so there will always be need for discussion. as long as people are tolerant of other's beliefs there isn't a problem; the issue with today's world is that there is too much intolerance.

Earlier the world was not as much transnational as it is now. Different religions and cultures have originated and their customs and beliefs have taken shape over the ages, and their explanations/traditions are based on local conditions.
When persons bearing different religious/cultural beliefs interact with each other, they both say the truth...based on their own religious/cultural experience/knowledge. But when it is not accepted by others...religious conflict results.
Education and development has minimized the religious disputes to a certain extent...but a large part of the globe remains untouched by this development. Also, those who are educated become fundamental when it comes to religious questions.
All this fighting over religion will give way to tolerance...once the world becomes a more balanced in terms of development & education.

Because not everybody believes the same thing, obviously. To some people, there is no God. Fighting over religion is just plain ridiculous, though. Nobody's getting anything out of it except for grief.

that's the point-- you have your idea, and everyone else has theirs.. that's the beauty of life. many many ppl think we'll have seperate destinations. who's right? we'll find out soon enough.
ppl have been fighting over religion for as long as there's been ppl, almost. as a matter of fact, you're doing it right now, but you may not think you are. you're asserting that there's only one God-- when there's ppl who believe in many gods, for example.. and so, your opinion is opposite to theirs, thereby, you're fighting their ideas..
the fight/debate over religion will never stop... well.. it will.. but that's the most dangerous time of all, trust me.

it would take a lot for people to realise that. People have their sources (eg sacred scriptures) and believe that what they hold is correct. it may be, how can we know? FAITH. getting the world to agree on one God, is like putting all the government leaders together and getting them to agree on something! it will never happen, unfortunately. its a tricky question, hope this will help answer it a little.

Why don't people realize that all gods are myths, and accept that we must live for our species benefit and FOR THIS LIFE, not some fairy tale after-life?
