A lot of people and even some educationists are of the opinion that a child can begin pre-school from age 2. I find this not acceptable. Children in general are inquisitive and eager to learn. That does not mean that they can start pre-school from age 2. I think from age 4 or 5 is a good start.

My little one starts preschool the day he turns three. He had to be potty trained to go, but this is a Christian preschool. He not only learns the basics and has fun, but he gets a great foundation also. This is only 1/2 day 2 days a week, and it's through the church I attend. At age 4 he will go to another preschool class in the mornings (Public) for 1/2 day 5 days a week and another preschool 1/2 day three days a weekin the afternoon (Christian). My reasoning for this is to prepare him for Kindergarten the following year. If he shows that he is not quite ready, of course I will not push him for he is still young. A child that starts preschool to soon can have regression in many areas, however it depends on what they are trying to teach and if you are ready as a parent to leave your child in the hands of another person just yet. I have taught my kids some of the basics before they go to school or preschool. They know basic colors, and how to count to 10 and their full name and their parents full name. However this is my field of study, children learn more than you think at a young age, this is why they are teaching some basic spanish as well as english in most schools at a very young age. I believe if the parent is ready and feels that the child is ready then go for it, otherwise I feel they should wait until the child shows signs of being ready.... Leaving parents for extended time, socializing well, being potty trained, grabbing a bag and asking to go to school. My son does all this.

I think that around 3-4 because they start kindergarten at age 5.(It may be different where you live) 4 is an ideal age! They can learn to interact with other children and get used to being away from home too!
