1. Backpack with lots of compartments
2. Fanny pack with lots of pockets (for money, passports, etc)
3. Oakley shades (lightweight and looks cool)
4. Aquasocks (for the beach)
5. Raincoat that can be folded real small or into a bag
6. Digital Camera with large capacity storage card
7. A diary

It is not clear if the traveler is Aussie or not.

If they are from another country (such as USA or UK) a very practical and thoughtful gift is to buy them travel insurance. There is an amazing number of things that can put a warp into a trip. They will be eternally grateful to you if it turns out that they need the benefits the policy provides.

You will want to get them something that covers them for health issues and for trip interruption. The industry leader is TravelGuard. Go to http://www.wavehelp.com/travel-medical/index.htm and click on the red phone booth. You can buy it for them - just enter their information for the policy and your information for the payment arrangements.

Best wishes.

Ask the person what they would like/need. The worst thing you can do is spend time/effort/money finding something that you think they will really like, to then find that they already have a better one, or they don't need it at all. Chances are, the person has already spent time working out what they need to buy before they leave, so if you offer to tick one item off their list, they'll appreciate the fact that you really want to buy the right thing rather than surprise them with something totally useless! If they only need expensive items, offer to put some money towards them. Any help you offer will be appreciated!!

They can always find salt crackers to go with it but can they find their favorite peanut butter. For the when ever snack that reminds you of home. They can be purchased in soft containers and don"t need to be refrigerated. This is a gift that show some thought and concern. For that late night night snack. You will be remembered each time they have some.

A couple of audio versions of great English novels, so the person travelling will not forget what REAL English is while being surrounded by people speaking it with the most hideous accents.

Seeing as they will not be around for a year it is useless to get them something to keep at this point. Your best bet is to buy something useful that they will take with them that they dont already have : soft box of tissues, baby wipes, asprin, Immodium, condoms etc.....either that or a pre-paid phone card so that they can call home, or an electronic address book so that they can put all of their contact details in one safe place.
