I doubt that most of these physical attacks are spankings. Most people in America wouldn't even call a spanking an attack, actually. Especially young men admitting that they've attacked a dating partner. Young men likely to 'attack' a partner are likely to use the word 'attack' in a more traditional sense. To hit, kick, pull hair, shove, or rape.
I'd say none of the men who admitted to attacking a partner had done so by spanking them. I'm not saying that it doesn't happen, but that's not likely to be what they mean by 'attack'.
Smacking girls' butts is a rather popular form of harassment that many men often believe should be taken as 'appreciation', but I'd bet not one of the men guilty of this believes it's an attack.

I think that unfortunately, women are still subservient to men and so therefor, may not speak up when things such as that (that they do not consent too) happen. They see it as "play" or "arousal" behavior or are so into it themselves at the time that they don't say anything about it.
Seems to me that you could be on to something there.

It would not be that humilliating because the woman should be able to identify between abuse or just plain male fettish.
