I've had problems keeping my weight normal since a few years now. I had a baby 4 months ago and now i'm desperate to fit back into size 10 clothes(i'm a 16 now). The problem is whenever i feel low i binge eat ,sometimes i don't get back on my diet for a few days and i gain back the pounds that i just lost.
I realised recently that my attitude towards food stems from my childhood.
My parents would give me the same food portions as them and tell me if i didn't eat it all then i'd eat it for breakfast.
When i went to my grandparents every sunday i felt safe and happy. The thing is whilst i was there they would stuff me full of sweets, cakes, trifle, crisps, chocolate, ice-cream - you name it they had it, and i could eat whatever i wanted.
I eat big portions, i can never seem to stop when i'm full and i binge on crappy foods when i'm down - if theres none in the cupboards then i go the bakery and get choc ecairs etc.

anyone know how i can combat this?

Ha, a fellow... eater. I was once suggested that I use eating, and being overweight (I am size 12-14, depending), as a shield from the world, to protect myself. You seem to have the same reaction - getting something sweet will "protect" you from being forced to do / eat something you don't want.

I would suggest (what works for me) is taking some time (I _know_ it's hard with a little kid) for meditation / rest, to drop your stress levels. When you feel calmer and more secure, the drive to stuff yourself will drop. And then you need to constantly remind yourself of your goal, especially when you start eating.

There are two types of people, as far as I know - people who can entirely give up eating a certain type of food, and people who can limit themselves to a little bit, e.g. a bite or two only, if they know they can have some more later, even though that later may be 'tomorrow' or 'next week'. I suggest you experiment a little bit and find out which type you belong to, and act accordingly - by dropping certain foods entirely from your diet (not all at once, of course), or limiting the amounts of food you take, until you get down to the amount of calories you need to take in a balanced diet.

Oh god that sounds familiar. I have battled with this all my life and am only now getting it under control.

Try Paul McKenna's book 'I Can Make You Thin'. I watched the series on TV and the advice he gives is all very good. It's all about breaking the cycle, slowing down your eating and enjoying your food.

It sounds like you already know where your attitude towards food comes from, but I also found 'When Food is Love' by Roth Geneen immensely helpful. I cried through most of it because it was so familiar, but it was excellent in helping separate the times when I really craved food and when I was craving affection.

Best of luck!

Rivita and fruit. Cut out all main meals and just snack on that for two weeks. Plus get your ipod and start power walking. Stand tall all the time holding your wieght from the center. Laugh a lot and keep busy. In the two weeks you will see a change in your body that when you go back to three meals a day you will make them small and good for you. I've done it and the wieght just stays off now

Anyone who eats for any reason other then hunger is an emotional eater to some degree. I was one of those and went to www.masteringfood.com which has definately worked as it makes you independent of foods. The work only with the emotional aspects of eating, when I felt ready I coupled it with southbeachdiet.com and that killed all my carb cravings and is a really healthy tasty diet too so you won't be depriving yourself. Masteringfood.com is actually very clever - you just cannot outsmart it no matter what angle your sneaky inner voice tries.

food will never provide the love and attention you need. Eat healthy food and think of it nourishing your body. Imagine tyhe vitamins going into every pore. That's how I see it. I also love to eat sweets, but I know that they are the enemy. Walk past the in the supermarket and think: 'ha! you are not gunna get the better of me!' Start taking gentle exercise. The pounds will roll away!
Good Luck!

I know it's one of the oldest lines, but in order to change you have to want it.

I've had similar issues with food, and couldn't break the cycle until I stopped comfort eating. Stop buying the junk that makes you unhappy and find something else to do to beat the stress. I find coming on here works for me as it takes my mind off things for up to several hours.

Be warned though. Yahoo answers addiction is a serious condition.
