The idea behind the phrase is that if you've eaten it, you don't have it anymore.

You miss the point. Once you've eaten your cake, you won't have it any more, and so won't be able to enjoy it for a second time. I suppose this well-known phrase would be more readily comprehensible if it were "You can't eat your cake and still have it", but then again I didn't invent it. However, the point that you can't have it both ways is usually true.

it means' you can't keep your cake and eat it too.' Its an old saying and language has changes slightly since it was first said. so, you can either have your cake, or you can eat it then it would be gone and you wouldn't have it any more

The same reason that people refer to "Chomping at the bit" or "the manner-born" - they can't be bothered to check the actual reference.

The saying is "You can't eat your cake and have it too," meaning that you can't enjoy it now and still have it for later. Life involves choices, and you can't have everything.

the saying makes perfect sense, if you think a little. just rub your temples to stimulate your brain a little ........., there..... ok, here goes: IF YOU EAT THE CAKE, THEN IT'S GONE, SO YOU CAN'T HAVE IT, AND EAT IT. IT'S ONE OR THE OTHER, GET IT!!!!!!!!

PLEASE SEND ME A DOLLAR FOR THIS ONE. IT'S JUST MORE THAN I CAN TAKE.

It means you can't have everything. Think of it in terms of money...you can't save you money and spend it too.

and once it is spent, it is gone. but you could buy something that will go up in value, whereas with cake, when it is gone, it is gone.

"Having it" in this case does not mean just getting a piece it means holding on to it as in keeping it. So you're either going to eat it or keep it, you can't do both.

LOL. The phrase means you can't have everything in life, you have to give up something to get something. That's what it means.
