Because GA carry an element of risk even though it is very small. But it is still a risk, thus more poperations in hospital are done under sedation rather than General Anaesthesia.

If you have serious fears about treatment, speak to your dentist about sedation. This can be done in a variety of ways from having a tablet the night before to Nitrous Oxide to IV sedation.

All of these are far safer than GA and are more widely available.

To actually answer your question, yes, it is possible to arrange to be put completely to sleep for dentistry. It's not cheap and no insurance will pay for it, but it's possible. Ask around or (I shudder to say) check the Yellow Pages for a specific listing.

Many major university hospitals have a dental department and they can arrange for this type fo treatment, also. I'd go there before checking the Yellow Pages.

it's not good to be gassed and knock out...you don't know if your dentist will do anything to you while you are out !!
