The "thump test" goes like this...
If the melon sounds like you are thumping on your forehead, it isn't ripe enough. If it sounds like you are thumping on your chest, it's just right. If it sounds like you're thumping on your tummy, then it's very ripe (possibly too ripe) and needs to be eaten right away.
The riper it is, the sweeter it will be. My Grandpa taught me this when I was a little girl, and I've never known it to fail yet.

My grandad raised watermelons and somehow he knew by thumping the melon and looking at the vine. By lightly thumping he was listening for a certain hollow sound. This is all I know about watermelons. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

The sweetest watermelon is a ripe watermelon. I do the thump test to try to guage if it's ripe. The more "hollow" it sounds the riper it is. Just thump the melon at the middle of the body, and listen to it compared to others.

Use a syringe with long thin needle. Poke in and withdraw the juice. Then taste!!!

mi madre ( my mom ) always said if its hard it will be an ok taste but if its kinda soft when u press on it, it will be sweet.. but wont be as crunchy.. kinda mushy..
