First of all to answer your question, no they don't. They know it was written by many different men and the Old Testament is about 3000 years older than the new testament. This is written before the time of Christ and deals with the Jewish people and laws.
Paul wrote a very large portion of the New Testament. They do know that, and he never met Christ. He was Saul, the man that killed Christians and converted. As for all of the others, it is pure speculation. They are pretty sure the Gospels were written by Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. I have also heard John may have written Revelations.
They were not all prophets. Some were story tellers or writers of History.
The Bible was written by man, and rewritten and rewritten and well, I could keep writing that all night.
You will have to do your own research for biographies on the authors. Its way past my bed time and that would take all night.

The Old Testament was written in order to chronicle the history as men knew it by the various kings if Israel...obviously this didn't start until after the first actual king which was Saul...until then they had religious leaders rather than technical kings. Most of the Old Testament is historical...some of it was written by King Solomon and King David and there are some prophets in there... The New Testiment was written by the Apostles...some of it was the history according to certain people and other parts are letters written to new believers in certain areas from one apostle or another. Not all of the bible is about revelations...much of it is historical events, what happened and why...

If you get a student bible that has commentary included it will give you the low-down on each individual book, who wrote it, and what the purpose of it was as well as the time it was written. A good place to pick one up is at www.christianbookdistributers.com

If you use the word author, there is only one author and it is God. Those who wrote it are called the prophets who just kept on writing what was dictated to them. They do not interpret the words. This I am talking about the Old Testament. You will notice the consistency of their messages from the Major to the minor Prophets. All the Books written by different prophets is considered one book of God and he is the author.
Now for New Testaments, you will find that the four major Apostles sometimes do not agree with their reports. Some of their reports was obviously are from what they heard around from people and not from direct inspiration from God. And the excuses you will hear from their priest today is because they are written in different times and places to different kinds of people. Obviously since Christianity was taken over by the Romans in the latter part of the century after Christ's death chances are The Book about Christ was heavily tampered with and up to now they tend to keep on revising the edition. Actually if you will ask me personally, I believe the New Testament we have now is not even a New One because in the Book Of Jeremiah and Isaiah, God said that He will make the Old obsolete when he puts His New Testament into the hearts of all people and no longer will your brother tell you to come and let us learn about God because I will be there in everyone's heart and mind.

If you check the authorship of each book of the bible it is usually in the fore pages of the book. Like in the New King James Spirit Filled Life Bible. Some of the authors are unknown but they do speculate.

The ultimate author of the bible is God. The bible was written by prophets breathed by the Holy Spirit

Many/ most of the writers are known to Christian Scholars.

The One God, Creator of the Universe, inspired individuals (called prophets) to speak and to write the various things that are in the Bible.

Cordially,
John

Technically the bible is authored by God. But written by men. so it's ok.
They don't know ALL of the writers, but most.
A study bible will normally have nice factoids (if i may) before each chapter that tell you things like authors and time periods and things like that.

there is some controversy about authoship of new testament books ... and the selection process which "put some in" and "left others out' ... and whether or not the "in" books were written as attributed (75% apprx are authored by the guy "Saul of Tarsus" ... did he *really* exists? or was he fabricated ... hard to really say)
