My brother and i got home and we went into the basement where we have to keep our dog Freak because grandma's dog is demon!
well, i discovered she got in the trash in the bathroom. it was from the bathroom all the way into the living room!
i picked her up, carried her over there, and rubbed her nose in it, yelled that she is a bad dog, and hit her once.
my brother then starts babying her!
he picks her up, makes her look at the mess she made, talks in babytalk to tell her not to do that again!
after i yell at her i always waite a couple minits, then be nice to her cause it always freaks her out when i punish her.

Think of it this way, you're the dog, you make a mess in the trash when your owner leaves, by the time your owner gets back, you forgot you've made the mess, you go up to your owner all excited to see him, he grabs you and rubs your nose in rubbish and hits you... well, obviously the owner didn't like your excited greeting, better not do that again! See how that works?
Best to keep anything she isn't allowed to touch away from her. If you're not going for long (an hour or two is fine, no longer though), try popping her in a crate.
You need to teach her through repetition, the things that you WANT her to do. If you catch her in the act of something you don't want, say sharply AHHHH NO. She will get the idea if you are consistent and use the same command word for the same thing every time. Training is a lifelong venture, you have to use it everyday.
Look up NILIF online "Nothing in life is free" It's a great way to put training into practice in everyday life and will become habit for you to do as well.

How to punish an owner?
Your dog should have been crated while you were out. It must be supervised whenever it is out of the crate, because it clearly doesn't know right from wrong.
Rubbing her nose in it does not make any sense to the dog, so don't bother. Hitting the dog teaches it that you can't be trusted and will make her defensive. Any punishment given AFTER the dog has done the deed, will be meaningless and confusing to the dog.
The correct thing to do would have been to clean the mess up, without any fanfare or comments towards the dog, then go to Petsmart and buy a crate as well as a DVD on proper crate training.

Your dog did not deliberately go through the trash with bad intentions thinking of how to annoy/irritate you. She was simply looking for food. That' natural of a dog. Unless you correct its behavior during the act, it's no point to rub trash on her nose or yell. Instead, try (1) putting a piece of her favorite treat into the trash can, and (2) wait until she goes for it, and give her a firm "NO! Off!!" Your tone alone should be enough for her to understand she is doing something wrong. You and your brother should also get on the same page on her to correct her behavior otherwise your inconsistent reactions will confuse her.

You are wrong. It was much too late to punish the dog. The poor thing is not like a human. It cannot put two incidents together and understand what you are trying to say. Now she might think the bathroom is a bad place but not know why. You should NEVER rub a dog's nose in anything. The ONLY time to punish a dog is IF you catch them in the act. You had better do some reading on the internet on dog training before you turn the pooch into a neurotic. In any case, dogs respond much better to a reward system.... not violence. You are a beast and I don't like you and I hope a neighbours dog chews your arm off. Monster...... BOOO!!!! GRRRRRRR.........

Neither method is going to make a big difference for whether your dog gets into the trash again. Dogs live in the moment, so addressing the behavior after the fact is way too late for it to mean anything to them. Yelling at her after she's already done the deed is just going to make you afraid of her, and explaining to her in baby talk that she did something wrong is like me explaining to you in Latin that you messed up your homework -- you wouldn't understand a word of it.
In truth, the best way to keep your dog out of the trash is going to be to put it somewhere that she can't get at it. Make sure she has plenty of toys and things that she is allowed to play with so that she has something that will keep her occupied.
If you really want to train your dog, the best training methods involve teaching your dog what you want her to do rather than trying to get your dog to stop doing something. If your dog is jumping, don't just tell her "no jumping", ask her to sit or some other behavior. If your dog is running around like a lunatic, it doesn't mean anything if you say "no running" but you could perhaps teach her to play dead. In the example you gave, teaching a dog "don't get into the trash" isn't a behavior you can teach, it's the absence of a behavior, so better to do is to train what you want her to do instead. I train my dogs on a "Leave It" command, where they learn that they get treats or toys by looking at me instead of at the thing they're trying to get. That said, I also don't leave the bathroom door open, since one of my guys thinks eating tissues is pretty great stuff.
Make sure your girl is getting plenty of exercise and mental stimulation too, because a tired dog is a good dog!

the last thing you ever want to do is rub a dog's nose in a mess they made. I would suggest putting things out of his/her reach when you are gone. I.E. close the bathroom door, put kitchen trash can at the back of the counter, etc. Hitting your dog is not a good idea either, that is how dogs eventually turn on you or some one else.

I don't know, my hubby and I argue about this too. I don't think hitting does any good, it just makes them either aggressive or afraid of people. Rubbing the nose thing will only work when you catch them in the act. You need to make sure that when you leave they are not in an environment that they can get into trouble, because it will be too late to deal with it when you get home.

Dogs live in the moment, so if you try to punnish them for something they did a long time ago then they won't connect the two things together.
When my dog does something she's not supposed to (such as get into the trash) I will say, " Her Name and No." then have her go lay down. A time out..
It seems to work for her and she knows when I tell her no she's doing something wrong. The only other thing I can say is when you have her go lay down on his/her bed you need to enforce it by making sure they stay there until you verbally release them by saying ok.
Hope this helps.

hey i recently got a puppy so ive been doin a lotta research on tht. most of the sources agree that u should always punish DURING the act and not after. so if u catch her in the act, you could distract her n then maybe punish her. but if u rub her nose in it much later after she's done it, she's basically gonna be thinking 'why is he getting mad at me cuz there's trash on the floor'
