A dragonfly is any insect belonging to the order Odonata, the suborder Epiprocta or, in the strict sense, the infraorder Anisoptera. It is characterized by large multifaceted eyes, two pairs of strong transparent wings, and an elongated body.

Dragonflies typically eat mosquitoes, midges and other small insects like flies, bees, and butterflies. They are usually found around lakes, ponds, streams, and wetlands because their larvae, known as "nymphs", are aquatic. Dragonflies do not normally bite or sting humans (though they will bite in order to escape, for example, if grasped by the abdomen); in fact, they are valued as a predator that helps control the populations of harmful insects, such as mosquitoes.

They can't sting you and they are completely harmless 99% of the time. However I had one take a chunk out of my hand on a camping trip. I'm the only person I know that has ever been the victim of a dragonfly's mandibles.

As a kid I was told that a friend of my brother was bit by one.. But knowing him, he was probably pulling its wings off or some such thing.. Or it was nonsense..

Anyways.. We have tons of them around this year and I've never been bit by one.. It wouldn't make any sense for them to.. They eat mosquitos and there are plenty of those around.. And a dragonfly is not a drone like a bee or wasp.. It would reduce its odds of reproduction ( aka get killed! ) if it tried to bite people.. They aren't exactly stealthy. :P

oookay then.. there's my two bits :D

If you are a mosquito, the answer is yes. They certainly don't bite with their tails, though. Do you? For a fierce predator, they are remarkably gentle with humans.

Not usually, but they can bite you if you aggravate them enough.

They are actually a good thing to have around in your yard; they eat mosquitos and deer/horse flies!

No. They eat bugs such as flies and mosquitoes. I've had a few land on me while they had dinner, and it did tickle.
