Depends on how you define boyfriend. I had to be 15 before I could go on my first date, but that was years ago. I made the same rule for my daughter. Sure she had her so called boyfriends in Jr. High, but it was the passing notes, writing all over her spirals kind of thing. I don't think kids are ready for that kind of emotional heartbreak before that age and it tends to have a lasting affect. Every child is different though. You could have little miss responsible on your hands who is rather mature for her age...those things happen and there are always exceptions to the rule. Use common sense and make your decision based on your daughter's maturity level.

15 yrs olds in group dating situation for example: a double date.
16-20 year olds as long as their behavior has been trustworthy can go alone.
some may raise a brow when I include 20 yr olds in this but I personally feel if you are 20 yrs old and still living at home Teen rules still apply. Be in by curfew!! : )
Abstinence is advised Birth control should be accessible but hopefully unnecessary for a innocent date right? remember all parents fear for their children's well being and do not want their kids to get hurt or stuck with responsibilities before they reach Adult maturity. Aids is a big factor as well as premature parenthood so this is why parents take these precautions and have what may seem a hangup over this issue. God bless and take care.

Girls start looking and thinking boys are "cute" at 10 & 11 years old now. At that age, hopefully they are too immature to think more than that. However, by middle school sex does happen with kids. They will find ways to do it if they are curious. Definitely have the "talk" with them before it's too late. You would rather preach abstinence and safe sex than be preparing for a new grandchild while still raising your underage daughter. I would say 16 is an okay date to start dating but only in group dates and supervised as much as possible. Wouldn't you prefer that she hear about life and its consequences from you other than from a persuasive young randy boy with only one thing on his mind? At that age a girl is very naive. Make sure she isn't about sex and its consequences.

My dad didn't let me date until I was 18 which is probably a good thing since I was so boy crazy and if I had a boyfriend, I don't think I would have studied hard. However, I let my daughter date as soon as she was in high school. She didn't have great grades, but she is happily married to her high school sweetheart and is getting great grades now in college.
