Yes, it has been a US state since January 3, 1959, the 49th state. Over twice the size of Texas, we have more coastline, moose, mosquitos, lakes, and salmon than the rest of the states combined. All federal laws apply here (although the FAA tends to ignore our common and somewhat renegade private pilots).

You do, however, have to fly over an foreign country (that would be Canada) to get here. We're one time zone behind Pacific Time and one hour ahead of Hawaiian Time. Some Alaskans refer to the 48 contiguous/co-terminous states as "The United Sates" as if we weren't one of them.

Alaska had been a US territory since 1867 when it was purchased from Czarist Russia. (They had mostly wiped out the sea otters for their pelts and didn't know about the gold, oil, or strategic value of polar air routes).

The US briefly had a 49-star flag (7 rows, 7 columns) until August 21, 1959 when Hawaii joinded the union.

Alaska is the a state, however, not considered to be in what is known as the Contiginous United States. Neither is Hawaii for that matter. Contiginous means connected, so if you have heard that Alaska (or Hawaii) is not part of the Contiginous United States, that would be correct. Alaska (postal abbreviation: AK) was the 49th State to enter the Union.
